FORMAT EXPLAINED

How a Side Gusset Coffee Bag Is Built

A side gusset coffee bag is built around front and back panels with two folded gussets running along the sides. As the bag fills, the gussets open outward to create the familiar tall coffee-bag profile while giving the pack additional internal volume.

Front and back panels

The main faces normally carry the brand, product name, coffee information and other primary artwork.

Two side gussets

The folded side panels expand as the bag is filled, adding depth without using the box-style base of a flat bottom bag.

Artwork around the folds

Graphics can extend onto the gussets, but artwork should be reviewed in both the folded and filled positions before production.

Final filled proportions

Width, height, gusset depth and actual coffee fill all influence the final shape of the finished bag.

Side Gusset vs Flat Bottom vs Stand-Up Coffee Bags

Side Gusset

Classic tall coffee-bag profile

Two expanding side gussets create the traditional tall coffee-bag shape, with the front and back panels carrying most of the primary artwork.

Current format

Flat Bottom

Structured box-style profile

A defined flat base and side panels create a more structured filled shape, with additional panel areas and different closure configurations.

Stand-Up

Flexible bottom-gusset profile

A bottom gusset allows the pouch to stand after filling while keeping a broad front-and-back artwork area commonly used across flexible packaging.

Each format creates a different shelf profile, panel layout and filled shape. The right choice depends on your coffee, target fill weight, artwork and closure requirements.

RECYCLABLE DIRECTION

Recyclable Side Gusset Coffee Bag Options

Side-gusset coffee bags can use recyclable material structures such as MDOPE / PE and PE / MDOPE, based on configurations used in our projects. Actual recyclability depends on the complete pouch, including the valve and other components, as well as local collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure.

Compostable Material Options

Compostable material structures can also be evaluated for a custom side-gusset project. Because the suitable structure depends on barrier requirements, pouch components and the intended composting conditions, the material configuration should be reviewed for each project.
