What “Compostable” Means for Coffee Packaging

A compostable material direction must be assessed as a complete coffee package, supported by the documentation and certification requirements relevant to the intended claim.

Final compostability depends on the complete packaging structure, valves and zippers, certification requirements, the destination market and access to suitable industrial composting facilities. It should not be assumed that the package is accepted in every local system.

Compostable Coffee Bag FAQs

What makes a coffee bag compostable?

Compostability is assessed from the complete packaging structure and its supporting certification, not from one material name alone. Valves, zippers, inks and other components also need to be included in the review.

What compostable structures have you produced?

We have produced White Kraft Paper / PLA and White Kraft Paper / PLA (PLA+PBAT) structures in stand-up and flat-bottom coffee bag formats.

Are these coffee bags home compostable?

They cannot be assumed to be home compostable. A home-compostable claim would require the specific complete package to have appropriate certification or verification for those conditions. Disposal suitability otherwise depends on applicable certification, processing conditions and facilities available in the destination market.

Can compostable coffee bags use valves and zippers?

Selected PLA-based structures can use valve and zipper configurations. Every component must still be reviewed as part of the complete package and applicable certification direction.

Which bag formats have you produced with compostable structures?

We have produced these compostable structures in stand-up pouches and flat-bottom bags. The final format, size, printing and features require a project-specific review.

What information do you need to recommend a compostable structure?

Please share the coffee product, target fill weight, order quantity, preferred bag format, destination market, printing needs, valve or closure requirements and any certification requirements you need to meet.
